This novella takes place over barely 48 hours. How come that Fridolin and Albertine find their ways back together. Does Freud need some time on his own couch? How much licence does that give traumnovwlle to explore and experiment, in mind – and maybe body? Eroticism is only one aspect of this novella. It changes everything, and what has been said cannot be unsaid. For Fridolin, this confession of his wife, even though his confession is very similar, unmoors him.
This is a masterpiece unpeeling layer after layer of reality to show that there is no “core” reality besides sex and death maybeonly illusion after illusion. The big shock and surprise for me about this story was that it written inschnitzlr feels like something that belongs to an era twenty or thirty years traumnovlle, perhaps that is part of the point.
