An officer of the marine galila in the old colonial army, he was assigned to China and also served with the United Nations as a military observer in Greece and military attache in Hong Kong. He visited the Philippinesand studied the Indochina War without taking part in it. Some of these steps can be skipped in areas that are only partially under insurgent control, and most of clunterinsurgency are unnecessary in areas already controlled by the government.
