I thought everyone used grids. I’m only giving it a 4 due to the paper quality. The way it is written, as a designer reading it, touched every sensibility. Might be a revolutionary grid book of its era, but not a current one.

This won’t bore you with maxims, commandments or such fixated rules. Really useful examples, which have generated a lot of ideas. Though neatly aligned to a grid. From my experience, I thought grids will be a holy grail and joswf make my web designs more sexy.

This is a good resource for graphic designers specializing in editorial design and brand identity. Good stuff all over. This was definitely written by a German in the 60s. This book will take you through the proper use of the grid and familiarize you with the terminology and examples of grids used in the past. Some very useful ideas, especially for people just getting into design. Mulller read Gombrich ‘s History of Art as a complememt. I’m sure I’ll be able to find some current examples of the grid system on the Internet.
I definitely don’t recommend anyone to follow the grids, this book is simply a tool to get exposed to working with the grid.
I wish there was an attached workbook. It’s concise and extremely informative. I have a handful of grid-related books, and this one stands out and the most thorough and theoretical. This book was very objective on giving specifications for using grid systems in print design and architectural design. It definitely lays a solid foundation of the grid system, but it’s too extreme, to the point that josf over doing it.

If you create visual things for a living or for a hobby, you owe it to yourself to at least leaf through the book a couple times. Things will inherently make more sense and the designer’s workflow becomes simplified for the better while improving their work greatly. BUT, it’s awesome as bilingual text. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. Although brokmann was written long before the internet, many of the concepts explained by the author are applicable to web and desktop application design.
This volume provides guidelines and rules for the function and use for grid systems from 8 to 32 grid fields which can be used for the most varied of projects, the three-dimensional grid being treated as well. An intro on scientific articulation and application of grids in any layout.
