In another episode, he decides to visit London after reading the novels of Charles Dickens. To be fair, I suspect Huysmans was never interested in anything except ennui and this novel may well be a pointed stab at the aristocracy and flaneurs.

But, being something of a page-turner lover, and despite the utter brilliance and engrossing nature of the writer, I can’t be any more generous.

Motte, Dean De La Guy ruins his mind by being profligate, then ruins his body by being a hermit. But is is challenge to the very idea of the “novel” at the time while predicting neither the Uhysmans “Anti-Novel” or the Surrealist “Dream Novel” – it is, as I said, an illustration of a sensibility and a deep character study, not plot driven in the slightest – like a weekend spent visiting an odd but well-spoken individual with strange tastes who talks a lot.

As the title suggests it – “A Novel Without a Plot” – nothing much happens, so this might get the reader bored at times, but it’s worthwhile reading it, by all means. To me it seemed like a damning indictment on the fallacy haruby aestheticism. His early works had been Naturalist in style, being realistic depictions of the drudgery and squalor of working- and lower-middle-class life in Paris.

Unfortunately, several chapters are devoted to enumerating the various works of art and sensory stimuli that lead Des Esseintes practically the novel’s only character through his passionate aesthetic reactions – which can leave an ignorant reader like myself altogether unstimulated. Its key weakness, and why I can’t rate it higher, is that its enumerations made parts of it tedious and impenetrable for anyone lacking a 19th century aristocrat’s education.

I took it to a football game to read because I knew I would be bored without a book. This episode’s combination of irony, sympathy for the character, and vivid description of his thought processes makes the whole thing come to absurd life.

Des Esseintes, a genuine eccentric, not a show-off, spares no cost or effort in spurning boredom and making huysman life colorful and interesting. And partially, I question myself because, once again, I’m not that enamored of a French writer. Refresh and try again. Fortunately, beef tea cures all.

There can be no shadow of a doubt that with her never-ending platitudes the old crone has by now exhausted the good-humoured admiration of all true artists, and the time has surely come for artifice to take her place whenever possible. After the aristocracy of birth had come the aristocracy of money. Your Web browser is not enabled for JavaScript. One long chapter of Wilde’s novel inventories quite exhaustively various esoteric pursuits of the protagonist, including gems, perfumes, and spiritual practices. The most fascinatingly bleak of Dorian’s reads is this strange little book about a jaded perfumer with too much money, trying to fill up his boring, pleasure-sated days.
